Cancer Walk

by Jan Coffman

On October 4th, 7,000 walkers (including stroller pushers, wagon pullers and dog walkers) raised more than $400,000 to help fight breast cancer at the 9th annual Making Strides walk at the JW Marriott in Summerlin. The money raised at the 3.5 mile noncompetitive walk benefits the American Cancer Society. For more information on next year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk or other ways to help the American Cancer Society, go to their website at www.cancer.org

Plenty of authentic food and drink were available to attendees, as they enjoyed strolling minstrels, magicians, storytellers, jugglers, flame-eaters, belly dancers and games of skill.

La Strada Dell’ Arte Festival

by Jan Coffman

The 8th Annual La Strada Dell’ Arte street painting festival, September 27th and 28th, was a great excuse to get out and enjoy some great weather, some fantastic art and some funnel cake!

The La Strada Dell’ Arte Festival features local professional, student and amateur artists who use chalk to transform the sidewalks of Summerlin Community Centre Park into works of art. Attendees were welcome to join in on the fun – chalk, knee-pads and sidewalk space were available for those inspired to try their hand at street painting.

In addition, there was live entertainment, ice sculpting demonstrations, arts and craft vendors and great food on hand. I never pass up a funnel cake - and the fine people at the funnel cake booth even gave me some tips on how to make my own at home (400 degree corn oil and Gold Medal Funnel Cake Mix). For the safety of myself and others, however, I will be leaving the funnel-cake making in the hands of professionals.

The 4th Annual Bichon Picnic

by Jan Coffman

Bichons abounded at the 4th Annual Bichon Picnic at the Gardens Park.

The picnic benefited Small Paws Rescue, a non-profit Bichon and Bichon-mix dog rescue group. The event featured BBQ, a silent auction, games and, most importantly, all the adorable little dogs you could pet.

Go to www.smallpawsrescue.org for more information on this group and their mission.

Summerlin Pumpkin Festival

by Jan Coffman

The Coffman Team braved the cold to attend the 2nd annual Summerlin Pumpkin Festival.

In addition to picking out the perfect pumpkin, the festival offered face painting, fortune telling, petting-zoo petting, game playing, craft making and scarecrow decorating. There was also a farmer’s market, with lots of fresh produce, baked goods, roasted corn-on-the-cob, and goodies to be had (and yes, a funnel cake booth!).

Las Vegas is Going to the Dogs

by Jan Coffman

Our favorite city is world famous for its activities for people, but what about for its four-legged citizens? Don’t worry, Las Vegas has got your furry friends covered.

Two upcoming events to help fill in your pet’s social calendar: The annual Family Fur & Fun Festival, October 11th from 10 am to 4 pm at Summerlin Centre Community Park, 1800 S. Town Center Drive. Leashed pets and their human families can enjoy crafts, activities, demos, raffles and live performances. Admission is free, and there will be a $5 micro-chipping clinic for dogs, cats, ferrets and rabbits. The Nevada SPCA will be on hand with pet adoptions. For more info go to www.familyfurandfun.com.

Strut Your Mutt, one of Las Vegas’ premiere annual pet events, will be held on November 8th from 10 am to 4 pm at Dog Fanciers Park, 5800 E. Flamingo Road. Clark County Parks & Recreation promises that this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever – with new activities, canine performances, contests and crafts. For more information, visit www.strutyourmuttlv.com.

But planned events aren’t the only way a dog can get out-and-about in Las Vegas. The Coffman Team’s four-legged family members recommend one of the city’s off-leash dog parks. Below is a list of a few:

BalloonaPalooza

by Jan Coffman

On September 19th through the 21st, North Las Vegas hosted BalloonaPalooza III at Craig Ranch Regional Park. Back in the eighties, The Balloon Festival would once a year fill the skies of North Las Vegas with hot air balloons. The festival then moved on, and until a couple of years ago, remained a part of the City’s past. Then, in 2006, it returned to North Las Vegas as BalloonaPalooza, and has been held yearly ever since. In addition to the early morning hot air balloon “glows”, the festival featured live music from national, regional and local acts, carnival rides and games, and many craft and market vendors.

North Las Vegas Airport

by Jan Coffman

The North Las Vegas Airport is home to nearly 700 based aircraft (including Kerry’s Bonanza) and 25 commercial businesses, and is the second-busiest airport in Nevada based on total aircraft operations.

The airfield, originally called Sky Haven Airport, opened on December 7, 1941. The opening celebration was interrupted by news of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the scheduled flying demonstrations were cancelled. Despite that rocky start, the airport became successful during World War II, used by Las Vegas Army Air Base pilots for off-duty flying. The Sky Haven Airport was also frequented by legendary aviator Howard Hughes during those early years. The airport was renamed Thunderbird Field in the 1950s, and paved runways, a new administration building and restaurant were added in the early 1960s. The airport has seen considerable change since then, including receiving its current name, North Las Vegas Airport, in 1965, and more recently a new 15,600-square-foot terminal building completed in 1992.If you are a pilot visit:  www.airnav.com/airport/vgt

North Las Vegas Airport is a great place to get a bite to eat, a tour of the air traffic control tower, or to catch Kerry tooling around the hangar doing a little airplane maintenance. A couple of tips: tours of the tower are free but you need an appointment, and don’t forget to bring cookies for the controllers (it’s the traditional “payment” for the tour). And if you happen to catch Kerry, remember that flying is his favorite thing and Las Vegas is his favorite city. Talking him into giving you a bird’s-eye tour of the city is pretty easy (cookies wouldn’t hurt in this case, either).
